Just because it says homeschool in the title. . .
Many educational businesses indiscriminately use word “home schooling” (or the words “home schooling”) in their advertising to market their generic services to home schoolers. OntarioHomeschool DOT com is actually the site TorontoTutors DOT com with a different title, and is a perfect example of one such site.
This bothers me so much simply because there is already a lot of misinformation circulating within the home schooling community itself. Once “outsiders” with no experience with (and less concern for!) the unique situation of Ontario home schoolers are added to the mix, it is easy for people to find and believe the wrong information.
This site is particularly dangerous because the website URL sounds so trustworthy! You might be suspicious of WeJustWantYourMoneyTutoring DOT com . . . but OntarioHomeschool DOT com sounds about as official as you can get. (And suspiciously like the address for the Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents!) Yet, right on the front page it states:
YOU MUST PASS Grade 11 Math and Science and Graduate from High School.
You would think that you’re getting information about university entrance for home schoolers, but since you’ve all come to hear me speak about this very topic, you’ll know this is clearly false. Elsewhere on the page, you’ll find other gems of wisdom such as:
At the End of the Day The Course Marks are The ONLY Evidence of Any Knowledge.
(The inappropriate use of capital letters is theirs, as is the ridiculous sentiment – especially given that this is supposedly written for a home schooling audience.)
It is unfortunate that what could be such a useful, helpful domain name has been corrupted by what would appear to be an unscrupulous business person with no regard for home schoolers. Fortunately, their site is so amateurishly done that I doubt many people would consider it a credible source of information. Nonetheless, it is a good lesson to remember: ANYONE Can Buy A Domain Name.
Remember that your official sources for Ontario home school information include the O.F.T.P., their page of trusted links, and of course, my site!
