An informative perspective on the Ontario University Fair – review by a marketing professional

I found this article really interesting.  This review of the OUF (Ontario University Fair) is from the perspective of someone who markets educational institutions professionally.  I’ve been to this event several times, first in 1991 as a graduating high school student and then as a guidance counselor, so I’ve had the opportunity to view the OUF from a couple of different perspectives. I really enjoyed finding a new perspective!

If anything, this reminds us that while we may think that these are informational events, they really are marketing events.  The universities have something to sell, and they’re not above using giveaways, gimmicks and flash to get you to buy.

In fact, one of my former students represented his university as a senior student at the OUF a couple of years ago.  He was instructed (paraphrasing), “Don’t give any real answers. If you look like you know something, you’ll never get rid of them.  Hand out books and keep people moving.  Get them to fill out contact cards for more information.”

The review can also prepare you for what to expect if you haven’t yet attended the university fair.

A similar review for the Ontario College Fair is also available on the same website.  Since the OCF occurred later, this review also compares the two events, from a marketing perspective.
